Will you just listen?

We live in a fast world. Our mobile phone is our new accessory. We can get our emails by phone. Go straight to Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Whether we are walking along a street or in a meeting. We can get downloads in an instant. Social media talks about “real” time messaging. Everything is instant. Used to be it was just instant coffee! Now there are so may coffees, there is rarely an instant to drink them! You can order your shopping online, have a hot piping dinner from the microwave, check in for that flight you arranged. With all this instant accessibility, have we lost the ability to listen?

Listening is one of life’s greatest skills.

The greatest motivators are not the talkers. They are the listeners. They make others feel important by listening to them. Being interested in someone else can get you out of your own head.

There are different types of listening styles.

There is the surface listener. We have all experienced this. They listen for the sake of listening. Their eyes dart around the room wondering what they are missing out on. Consider how this makes you feel? When you actively listen the other person is very aware they are being heard.

The greatest type of listening is to listen with empathy.

This means to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and get a sense of how they feel. We often make judgments randomly, assume we know the full story and often we haven’t a clue of what is going on in the other person’s life. To put yourself in the other person’s shoes meaning listening with empathy. It means you are looking at life from the other person’s point of view. You will learn more, listen more intently, and the other person will know this. You will feel it, they sense it! You make a connection.
Want to impress someone?

If you really want to impress someone, talk about them for a change. What are their interests? What do they love to do? Chances are, you will find that they think you really interesting if you do this.

Listen up – it’s worth it!

You can’t change everything!

Let’s get real here. Some things are out of our circle of control. It’s that simple. Focus on what you can control:

Your life becomes much more tolerable when you focus on what you can control.

Some examples are:
Your thoughts – positive and negative
Your daily habits
How much you watch T.V.
The amount your are eating.
The amount of your time that you give to others
The amount of fun in your life.

People working in the area of personal and professional development are just like everybody else. How could we possibly know about these things without experiencing them? The difference is we have a toolbox from which to pick out that tool that will “fix” things as best we can.

Questions for you:

What are you reading?
How much of your life is habitual?
How successful has whinging and moaning been to date?
Does watching endless T.V. help you achieve the kind of life you want?
What can you do to replace the food you eat because you are bored?
What can you do to stop becoming bored?
How could you stop running around after everyone else?
What makes you laugh and when did you last laugh?

Focus on what you can control:

If you focus on what you can control then you won’t feel as if life is controlling you! Start to focus on what makes you feel good. Listen to the kind of music you like until you are bopping! It does not necessarily need to be costly to feel good. What are you saying repeatedly to yourself in your head?

Here are some ideas for positive change in your life:

Reading positive literature will have a profound effect on your mindset.
A short walk each evening is a start towards a new fitness regime.
List the daily habits that are not serving you well. Change them!
Stop moaning and start living.
What have you always wanted to do but haven’t. You can give up some TV!
If you are eating because you are bored, you need to DO something!
Stop running after everyone and start walking towards a new life.

Be your own chemist:

Laughter is the very best medicine. Be your own chemist. Lighten up.

We may move house, we may change cars, we may even change the colour of our hair. However, we only have one life! So live it!

What are your Talents?

Everyone is born with talents. It may be that you are a great talker. You might be a great fisherman. You may be someone who can write with effortless ease. Whatever your talent, my question is:

Are you using the natural talents you were born with?
Are you going through your whole life putting off that book that you know you could write? Or what about that picture that you know you could paint? At the end of your life, your natural talent will be no more. If unused, consider how sad it would be. Imagine giving a really beautiful present to someone.

You have taken great care to give them that something special, a once-off item. You gift wrap it. You put on those nice ribbons and bows on that special present. And then, when you give that present with all your heart, it is tossed in a dark corner and never opened.

Not using your natural talents is like leaving a beautiful present unwrapped.

It might be that you are a great photographer. Imagine if you focused on creating great photos. They exist forever. They could be timeless. They could form part of history.

Have you ever been in the company of someone who plays a musical instrument and makes it sing and dance? Are you one of those people who constantly hear others say “I would love to be able to do that”? They are talking about you!

Your natural talent is a gift

It has been bestowed on you and you alone. Don’t waste that precious gift. You were born to shine. Find that gift inside you, share it, and be who you were truly meant to be.
